Job Description
Under the general direction of the City Administrator for the City of Great Bend, the Public Works Director is responsible for the oversight, maintenance, and improvement of the city's streets, alleyways, and public ways, as well as snow and ice removal, compost site operations, flood control maintenance, and engineering. This position plays a key role in ensuring that Great Bend’s public infrastructure is well-maintained and efficient, contributing to the overall safety and quality of life for residents and businesses.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge and Experience
A. Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to public works administration, including street maintenance, flood control, and engineering.
B. Proven experience in managing public works projects, budgets, and staff.
C. Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to public infrastructure.
D. Experience in emergency management, particularly related to snow removal, flood control, and natural disaster response.
- Skills and Abilities
A. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to build and lead effective teams.
B. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with the public, elected officials, and staff.
C. Ability to prioritize tasks and allocate resources efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
D. Knowledge of modern office software and public works management systems.
- Education and Certification
A. A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
B. A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in public works management, including supervisory experience.
C. Valid Kansas driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one upon hire).
D. Professional certifications (e.g., Professional Engineer or Project Management) are preferred but not required.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions.
- The position will require after-hours availability for emergencies and city events.
- May involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, or operating heavy machinery and equipment.
Salary/Compensation: $79,967 - $119,957 per year
